Are you interested in starting a journey in Jewelry Making and Metalsmithing? We have thoughtfully designed a 6 week program that will immerse you in the techniques of the trade while helping you find your creative voice. This program is designed to give you an in-depth introduction into the essential aspects of jewelry making and metalsmithing. From the basics of sawing, soldering and forming all the way to working with gold, lapidary and stone setting; this program will provide a comprehensive curriculum to give you the key components needed to create unique pieces of jewelry. Upon completion you will be able to confidently start your journey into the world of jewelry making – create your first line in silver or gold with gemstones, jump start a new passion, or pursue further specializations like enameling, wax carving and casting among many others.
Creative Side Jewelry Academy is happy to foster your desire of becoming a jeweler and metalsmith with small classes, no more than 10 students. All tools and most materials are provided for you during the duration of the program. We will also equip you with informative handouts, The Complete Metalsmith book by Tim McCreight, and more.
Each week will cover essential jewelry and metalsmithing skills: *
Week 1: This invaluable week gets you acquainted with our professional jewelry studio, maintaining and using all the essential metalsmithing tools, basic terminology, and the properties of metal. You will learn fabrication techniques including sawing, forming, texturing, riveting and more. Week One will lay the groundwork for making and designing your own jewelry.
Week 2: In depth intro to soldering. Creating multiples and making a matching pair of earrings. End the week with the basics of stone setting with a bezel set ring, plus practice several methods of alternative settings for stones and objects.
Week 3: Learn and practice the importance of sourcing supplies and modifying your own materials to make the most out of your jewelry making investment. With your modified materials you will create your own chain, handmade jump rings, findings. Take your skills to the next level with advanced soldering and fabrication. Creating designs with hinges and tube setting.
Week 4: Introduction to lapidary and cabochons. Cover basic gemology: what is rough stone, hardness, cutting, shaping, and polishing your own cabochons for your jewelry. Learn how to properly set stones in metal. Setting stones and inlay techniques will help reinforce soldering skills and introduce you to a new set of tools specific to this facet of jewelry making.
Week 5: Advanced stone setting such as flush with faceted stones. Make your own stone setting tools. You will learn more flex shaft tricks and how to polish to perfection for professional grade pieces.
Week 6: Imperative week to teach you how to add value to your pieces through seamless fabrication and GOLD. Be introduced to the properties of gold and how to incorporate it into your practice through methods of embellishment, granulation, and basic soldering and fusing. Create and execute a final statement piece.

This a Monday-Friday course with Friday’s optional. Friday will be an open studio day to give you one on one time with your instructor, troubleshooting questions, finishing projects, or guided practice time.
