3D Cloisonné Enameling with Harlan W. Butt

Monday - Friday, November 6 - 10, 10-6p

Enameling a three dimensional form may have its challenges, but there is a stunning and satisfying outcome. Students will be working on a cut shape from a 20g copper or fine silver sheet and wet packing enamels within the cloisonné wires. Several techniques will be demonstrated with cloisonné as the core application for enameling. This process is essentially drawing with wire and coloring with glass. It can be simple or complex. Everyone will learn how to do cloisonné in 3D from start to finish. Basic metalsmithing/jewelry skills and some enameling experience is helpful, but not required. Students with additional enameling experience may opt to work "in the round" on a vessel and literally defy gravity.

This class is taught by Harlan Butt who is a Regents Professor of Art at the University of North Texas where he has taught since 1976. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally for over thirty years and spent a year studying enameling and metalsmithing in Kyoto, Japan. Harlan is a past President of the Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG), and a past president of the Enamelist Society.
