Etching - with Salt Water with Jesse Bert

Friday -Sunday, August 3 - 5, 10-6p

Unbuckling intricacies of belt buckles through material dimension with the use of salt water etching.

In this workshop each student will complete a stunning belt buckle using a clean and elegant mechanism method. Explore the many possibilities of creating unique surface textures and 3-D low relief using salt water etching. The buckle mechanism will be attached to the back plate by rivets, then finished by embellishing the front side with etched panels, or other dynamic materials. Besides the etched components students might consider the use of hard-wood, plastic, or found objects.

Salt-Water etching is a wonderful, versatile, non-toxic technique that is easy to use once you understand the basic process. Any image that can be drawn on the surface of the metal can be etched. This technique does not work directly with silver, but transfers can be made using the rolling mill once primary plates are etched.
