"When I first found out how to sculpt metal with punches and chisels, it opened my eyes to a world of possibilities that I was now able to work towards. In the years that followed I honed my skills through trial and error, while I mastered an art that is very fulfilling and almost meditative. Since then I've decided to share my love of the art, and my process with others to help keep this ancient art alive, as well as put my student on the fast track to succeeding, without having to go through all the mistakes and wasted time that I did. "
Saign Charlestein was born in Tacoma WA. At age 7 he moved to Los Angeles CA, where he spent 12 years working in the film and entertainment industry.
During that time he worked under some of the most talented propmakers, carpenters, machinists, mold makers, costumers, and much more. It was here that he developed a love for creating thing with his hands, and especially working in metal.
He started out sweeping floors, and running errands, but before long he was running crews, and replacing the people who he was once working under. While he excelled in all aspects, and could make just about anything anyone could dream up, he specialized, and fell in love with making arms and armour. This led him down a seemingly endless path to learn all the old world techniques to decorate the most intricate and lavish pieces that the original artisans used. In the process, he learned to make the tools that were needed, as they weren’t readily available.
In 2011 Saign moved back to Tacoma WA with his new wife, by chance of a job offer she received. This led to Saign opening SC Studios LLC where he creates works of art, teaches classes, and makes and sells the tools used to create the work that he does. Saign’s works can be seen in blockbuster movies such as “The Chronicles of Riddick”, “Star Trek”(2009), TV shows such as “Heroes”, “Lost”, and “Bones” magazines such as “Vogue” “W” and “V”, costumes for pop stars such as Beyonce, Pink and Luke Steel of “Empire of the Sun” as well as numerous commercials, video games, and in the houses and businesses of private collectors.
In 2016 Saign won Best in Show and Best collaboration at Blade Show in Atlanta GA for a Main Gauche the he and Michael Quessenberry made in collaboration.
"I recently took a 5 day workshop with Saign as my instructor. His instruction is easy to follow and he teaches in a way that we walk away believing in ourselves more than we did when we started. In addition, his tools are fantastic and enable one to hammer for hours and hours without pain. I will take his class again as I know he can teach me more. Now I have a year to progress to the next level, should Escondido be fortunate enough to have him return to teach us again." Krissy Perrine
